What is a Gamma?

You can search the web and find many definitions regarding “gamma” such as:

Noun The third letter of the Greek alphabet (Γ, γ), transliterated as ‘g.’. Denoting the third in a series of items, categories, etc.

But I am going to set you straight on the real definition of a GAMMA!

A Gamma is the grandmother of teenagers! Yes, this is the real true definition and reality.

Why Gamma, what happened to the “R” in grandma or gramma? Well, I discovered that in this day and age this generation has their very own language and although it resembles our language (that of the Baby Boomer era) it is different. In fact, I am often saying “WHAT” and hearing mumbling on the other end of the table. The answers often come out , bubbee ahwhoda ka mea um! And of course I don’t understand a word they are saying, which shows on my forehead, and also in the disgusted look I get from the teenager speaking this language.  So, I try to repeat it back, did you just say bubbee ahwhoda ka hea am? And they say NOOOOOOO Gamma, I said, babbee ehwhoda ta mea um! And we go back and forth until one of us gives up.

At first I thought it was my hearing because at this stage in life I have perpetual ringing in my right ear (from a lightning strike while I was on the phone) and if I pay attention to it I can’t concentrate. Since my grandchildren acted like I was losing it or I was ignorant (let’s face it stupid is the best word) I started blaming myself and so I began to perk up and be more alert when they were talking….as though I would now understand their language! That did not work either. So I went for weeks not understanding everything they were saying! Until one day I realized it was not me and that we needed to have a conversation face to face where I could see their lips and begin to dialogue on how to understand each other.  That is when I found out I was Gamma and not Gramma , which is how I now identify myself.

NOT ONLY do teenage grandchildren have their own language but they also try to push your envelope.

I see so much struggle to break out and be their own person, with their own rules and own decisions and own money! They think because they are as tall as you they should have all the same privileges as you.  I often hear my grandson use me “Gamma” as an excuse for why he did something or should be able to do something. I’m glad my daughter in law loves me or else I’d be in as much trouble as her children sometimes.

Something else I noticed as a Gamma who lives with her grandchildren! They believe more of what the world is telling them than their parents.  Well, in the case of my grandchildren they are doing more questioning then believing. They are however wondering if their parents are right! That does not sit well with me since I have strong convictions and faith and can see that the lies are coming from their schools and friends!  And that dear reader riles me up! No wonder they need their own language, they are confused about what is real and not confident in what they are saying.

So if you read the explanations of a gamma ray….I think I am one of these!

“A gamma ray is an extremely high energy photon or “ray” of electromagnetic radiation. Gamma rays appear at the extreme upper end of the electromagnetic spectrum, up above X-rays with a bit of overlap.” (see above for reference)

I do not accept when my grandchildren are heading in the wrong direction from lies. My “extremely high energy photon or “ray” kicks in and other then standing on the table and yelling, I make sure they hear what I’m saying “with a bit of an overlap”! I do not zap them but I share with them my wisdom and experience and I make sure they know if they make the wrong choice, where they are choosing to go!

I make sure they hear that I’ve been around a long time and have suffered the consequences of bad choices and they can see in my life that it has not been with pleasant results.

If you are a grandparent, you might be asking if they actually listen to me?  YES, they do!  I see it in their actions, little by little they are moving to the truth and hopefully sharing it with their mixed up world with their mixed up language! That would be my objective and prayer!

So what is a GAMMA, it is an extremely high energy grandmother with a bit of an overlap who refuses to let the world consume my grandchildren!!!!!  I am the electromagnetic spectrum they don’t want to mess with in this day and age!
